Bioethanol fireplaces in a nutshell


Bioethanol is a pure alcohol. The great advantage of fireplaces on bioethanol is that no harmful substances are released during the combustion of this natural product. Neither does it emit CO or smoke. This in contrast to fossil fuels such as gas.

Ambience & Warmth

Bioethanol fires are primarily intended to be used to create a convivial atmosphere. Nevertheless, they also provide a pleasant warmth. The average system with a line of fire of 60cm already gives 3.5kW, which is the equivalent of a decent radiator.

No chimney, inlet or outlet

The only thing that is released during the combustion process is water vapour and CO2. This is exactly the same as what people exhale. That's why there is no need for a chimney or a inlet or outlet. So you can place the biohair wherever you want.


Bioethanol is an alcohol that is produced in a sustainable way from biomass. This is accomplished by fermenting sugars (from cereals (=wheat/maize), sugar cane, sugar beet...).

CO2 neutral

The addition “bio” is also used given that the combustion of bioethanol is CO2 neutral. This means that as much CO2 is emitted into the environment as the plant has absorbed in its growth process. Bioethanol is seen as an environmentally friendly solution and alternative to the use of fossil fuels (oil products).


Using bioethanol as a fuel in a fireplace is completely safe. What’s more, the clean combustion means no smoke or soot is released, so no chimney is needed either.

The scientific notation is C2H6O of ^OH. When burning bioethanol only CO2 and water vapour are released, which is the same as what humans and animals exhale. Note that no dangerous CO is released, as with traditional fireplaces on wood or gas.

The consumption of a bioethanol fireplace is therefore twice as important. For every centilitre of bioethanol that is burned, there is also a consumption of oxygen. An efficient system is therefore recommended.

Nearly zero-energy

Building nearly zero-energy NZE is an important milestone in the energy-efficient construction policy. The NZE principles will become standard for new homes as from 2021. This means that all new-build projects must comply with a very high energy performance (E30).
